Alternatives
for People with Autism, Inc. ("Alternatives") is a small, nonprofit, Minnesota
provider of services to people who are severely disabled by autism and mental
retardation, and who may have additional significant medical or mental health
needs. It is our intention to remain small, and to
focus on ever-increasing competence in the quality of service provided to
the individuals entrusted to our care.
The ongoing, long-term focus of Alternatives is on its two residential programs,
Shingle Creek Option, which provides a full range of residential and program
services to 14 adults in three apartments located in one building, and Little
House Waiver Site which provides similar services to three young adults
in a licensed foster care home/waiver site. Staff of extraordinary skill
and commitment have been acquired in these two programs, and the Board and
administration of Alternatives take great pride in the quality of life provided
through these programs. Referral to either of these residential programs

Alternatives also provides informational services, including training sessions

As long-term providers of services for persons who experience the dual developmental
disabilities of autism and mental retardation, we have an extensive library
of books, videotapes and other materials concerning autism, and information
concerning needs and available Minnesota resources for individuals and families
involved with autism. We also proudly provide tours of our residential programs
and provide information concerning the habilitational methods we have found
to be most effective.
In recent years, Alternatives has developed the CappsDATA
computer-aided process to support its direct-care services, dramatically
altering and enhancing the way in which our services are designed, administered,
